About John

John Hicks was born in London, Ontario, Canada on Halloween, 1935. He came to the UK to do a PhD at King’s College London. His subject was the effect of Wittgenstein’s later philosophy on meaningfully describing our inner experience. That endeavour ended his interest in an academic career. He then founded a market research company and co-created a games invention and marketing company.

He discovered the magic of acupuncture when both he and his daughter had treatment and that led, in 1974, to an opportunity to study acupuncture under JR Worsley. John then taught in JR’s College of Traditional Acupuncture (CTA), near Leamington Spa, UK for several years before setting up a Five Element emotion testing course for CTA graduates. In 1988 he undertook clinical training in Nanjing treating Chinese patients using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) protocols. Later, in 1989, with his wife Angela, he taught a TCM/Integration course for Five Element practitioners.

In 1993, John and Angela founded the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine (CICM), Reading, UK which integrates Five Element and TCM theory and involves an integrated treatment. John practises qi gong and tai chi and trained in Chinese herbal medicine with Ted Katpchuk. John is the author of Principles of Chinese Herbal Medicine and co-author of Healing your Emotions with his wife Angela, and the textbook Five Element Constitutional Acupuncture with Angela and Peter Mole.
